DiagnosisDiagnosis: Scales in 19 rows, with bidentate tips, all keeled. One or two preoculars; nine supralabials; more than 25 maxillary teeth, last two teeth abruptly much enlarged; internasals broadly truncate anteriorly; nostrils lateral. A nuchal groove and glands present, one anterior temporal. (Taylor 1965: 855)

CommentSome species of this genus are venomous although we do not have information about this particular species.

In his Key, Smith 1943: 248, inadvertently places nigrocinctus in the section B. "without nuchal glands.” On p. 15 he correctly states that the glands are present. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin “niger” and “cinctus”, which mean "black" and "belt". The name refers to the black bands on the body of the species.
