DiagnosisDiagnosis: (1) Frontonasal distinctly longer to slightly shorter than frontal; (2) nasoloreal suture absent or incomplete; (3) supraoculars four, second and third (sometimes fourth) in contact with ciliaries; (4) superciliary series incomplete, one or two; (5) supralabial-subocular fusion absent; (6) postoculars two or three, usually three; (7) postparietals two; (8) supratympanic temporals two or three; (9) genials two, posterior pair usually in narrow contact, transverse sutures not perpendicular with respect to midline of body; (10) dorsals rectangular, juxtaposed, striated/keeled; (11) longitudinal dorsal scale rows in males 22-29, in female 26; (12) transverse dorsal scale rows in males 36-39, in female 36; (13) transverse ventral scale rows in males 1819, in female 18; (14) lateral scale rows 1-4; (15) femoral pores in males 7-9, in female one; scales between femoral pores in males two, in female 21; (16) subdigital scales on Toe I four or five; (17) limbs not overlapping when adpressed against body in adults; (18) anterior cloacal plate scales paired; (19) hemipenis capitate; flounces bearing spines, forming two chevrons; asulcate flounces much narrower than sulcate flounces; asulcate expansion pleat absent; (20) dorsum brown, dorsolateral lines indistinct; small white spots or ocelli present laterally; ventral scales unicolored black with small white spots laterally.
Proctoporus colomaromani is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters (condition for P. colomaromani in parentheses): P. anatoloros [usually], P. balneator, P. oculatus, P. orcesi [usually], P. simoterus, and P. vietus: superciliary series complete (incomplete). P. hypostictus and P. orcesi: genials usually three (two). P. orcesi: femoral pores in females absent (present). P. anatoloros: postparietals three (two). P. cashcaensis: femoral pores in females absent (present), subcaudal transverse bands present (absent), hemipenial flounces in two columns (two chevrons). P. meleagris: femoral pores in females nine (one), dorsals smooth (striated/keeled), dorsum profusely (sparsely) speckled. P. labionis: fourth supralabial fused (unfused) to subocular, femoral pores in males 10-12 (7-9). P. raneyi: supraoculars two or three (four). P. petrorum: femoral pores in males four (7-9). P. stigmatoral: femoral pores in females absent (present), ventrolateral spots usually present (absent) on body and tail. P. unicolor: hemipenial spines absent (present), subcaudal stripes present (absent). P. vespertinus: anterior superciliaries two (one), supraoculars three (four). Species occurring outside Ecuador: P. luctuosus group: lateral scales in wide (narrow) band, superciliary series complete (incomplete), more than one femoral pore per leg present (one) in females. P. achlyens, P. laevis, and P. luctuosus: nasoloreal suture complete (absent or incomplete), dorsolateral stripes, ocelli, or other markings present (nearly unicolored). P. columbianus: dorsal scales smooth (striated/keeled), nasoloreal suture complete (incomplete or absent). P. striatus: superciliary series complete (incomplete); limbs overlapping (not overlapping) when adpressed against body: asulcate expansion pleat on hemipenis present (absent); dorsal and ventral color pattern composed of stripes (nearly unicolored, no stripes). EtymologyThe specific epithet is a noun in the genitive case derived from the modern name Luis Aurelio Coloma-Roman, in recognition of his contributions to the knowledge of the herpetofaunaof Ecuador. Most important, Luis has made many collections of Proctoporus, including all known specimens of Proctoporus colomaromani.
