mucronatus: Mexico (Parts of Hidalgo, Veracruz, Puebla, México, at high elevations). Type locality: Mirador, Veracruz.

olsoni: Mexico. Type Locality: San Juan Acazuchitlán (20°8’33.3”N, 99°36’15.8”W), 2646 m elevation, Estado de México, Mexico.

TypesLectotype: USNM 25077 designated by Smith (1938a). Holotype formerly USNM 25074-9.
Holotype: UCM 61083 (JLE 4503), collected 6 May 2000 by Julio A. Lemos-Espinal [olsoni] 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Smith 1939: 218 
CommentSynonymy: OLSON (1998) synonymized Sceloporus mucronatus with Sceloporus poinsettii.

Distribution: not in Oaxaca (MATA-SILVA et al. 2015). Reports from the Sierra de Taxco (Transmexican Volcanic Belt, Guerrero) are S. torquatus fide Pérez-Ramos and Saldaña de la Riva (2008).

Subspecies: Sceloporus mucronatus aureolus SMITH 1942 and Sceloporus mucronatus omiltemanus GÜNTHER 1890 have been elevated to full species status by MARTINEZ-MENDEZ & MENDEZ-DE LA CRUZ 2007. Note that these authors did not even mention olsoni. 
EtymologyThe Latin nominative singular mucronis, "sharp point," and –atus, "pertaining to," refer to the sharply pointed scales on the dorsum.

olsoni: This subspecies honors R. Earl Olson, who has studied Mexican herpetology for many years and who instigated the description of this subspecies.
