CommentSubspecies: Sceloporus ornatus oberon SMITH & BROWN 1941 has been elevated to full species. Sceloporus ornatus caeruleus SMITH 1936 has been elevated to full species status by MARTINEZ-MENDEZ & MENDEZ-DE LA CRUZ 2007.

Synonymy: Sceloporus nelsoni coeruleus TANNER & ROBINSON 1959 is a junior homonym of Sceloporus ornatus caeruleus Smith (1937d), and hence an unavailable senior synonym of Sceloporus nelsoni barrancarum TANNER & ROBINSON. 
EtymologyThe Latin noun ornatus, "decoration" or "ornament," refers to the ornate coloration.
