CommentThe original spelling was pyrocephalus (= fire-headed). SMITH 1939 corrected the common spelling pyrrhocephalus (= red-headed). 
EtymologyThe Greek pyro-, "fire," and kephale, "head," refer to the reddish head coloration, especially in females.
