Comment | Subspecies: Sceloporus ornatus oberon SMITH & BROWN 1941 has been elevated to full species. Sceloporus ornatus caeruleus SMITH 1936 has been elevated to full species status by MARTINEZ-MENDEZ & MENDEZ-DE LA CRUZ 2007. Synonymy: Sceloporus nelsoni coeruleus TANNER & ROBINSON 1959 is a junior homonym of Sceloporus ornatus caeruleus Smith (1937d), and hence an unavailable senior synonym of Sceloporus nelsoni barrancarum TANNER & ROBINSON. |

Etymology (caeruleus): The Latin adjective caeruleus means "sky- blue," and refers to the dorsal background color and the solid blue ventral color. Etymology (oberon): This is a Latinized noun from Old High German oberon, "king of the fairies", applied in reference to the black dorsal color of the subspecies - a color shared with the fabulous king. |
