assata: Pacific slopes, SE Chiapas southward to Honduras; Belize (Neill & Allen 1959); Type locality: Volcán Isalco, El Salvador.

taylori: Colima to SW Chiapas, in lower areas. Guerrero, Jalisco, Oaxaca. Type locality: Santiago, Colima.

CommentSynonymy, distribution, and subspecies mainly after SMITH & TAYLOR 1950. Not listed for Nicaragua by KÖHLER (2000). 
EtymologyThe name assata is formed from the Latin word assis (a copper coin) and the Latin suffix –ata (provided with, having the nature of, pertaining to). The name refers to the ‘‘fulvous’’ coloration described by Cope (1865a: 180) for the holotype.
