Comment | Subspecies: Schwartz & Garrido (1985) downgraded S. alayoi to S. nigropunctatus alayoi. RÖSLER (1995: 173) shows two color plates of “Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus cf. granti”. RÖSLER 2000 doesn’t list atessares as subspecies. Sphaerodactylus gibbus was synonymized with S. torrei by GRANT 1956. Thomas & Schwartz 1974 considered decoratus as a synonym of nigropunctatus but changed that later to subspecies. |
Etymology | Named after the dark brown to black spots, from Latin punctum = dot, spot, small hole. S. n. decoratus was named Latin decoratus after its decorated color pattern. Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus alayoi was named after Dr. Pastor Alayo Dalmau, head, Dept. Zoology, Univ. de Oriente, and Director, Museo "Charles T. Ramsden," in recognition of his contributions to Cuban herpetology Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus atessares was named from the Greek α- (= without) and τεσσαρες (= four), in reference to this being the only subspecies of S. decoratus (to which it was originally assigned) with three instead of four body bands Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus flavicauda was named from the Latin flavus (= yellow) and cauda (= tail), in reference to the bright yellow-orange tails in this subspecies Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus gibbus was named from the Latin (= humped or humpbacked), possibly a reference to Stocky Island, the type locality. Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus granti was named after Chapman Grant, collector of the holotype. Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus lissodesmus was named from the Greek λισσός (= smooth) and δεσμός (= halter), undoubtedly a reference to the smooth-sided body bands unique to this subspecies. Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus ocujal was named for the type locality, Ocujal, Oriente Province, Cuba. Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus porrasi was named after Louis W. Porras, co-collector of the holotype. Sphaerodactylus nigropunctatus strategus was named from the Greek στρατηγός (= military officer, defined as "admiral" in Thomas and Schwartz 1966), presumably a reference to the type locality, the US Naval Base at Guantanamo, Oriente Province, Cuba. |
