Holotype: MCZ 44987, originally in private collection #2956 (given as "writer's collection"), adult male. Paratypes: BMNH 1939.2.1.95-96. [lewisi] 
DiagnosisDESCRIPTION: Size small (SVL in males to 28 mm, in females to 29 mm); dorsals moderate to large, swollen to relatively flattened, rounded or obtusely angulate to acute, keeled, weakly to moderately imbricate, axilla to groin 27-50; no area of middorsal granules or granular scales; ventrals acute to cycloid, smooth, imbricate, axilla to groin 24-34; snout acuminate, short, moderately narrow; snout scales broad, rounded, or subhexagonal, smooth to keeled, juxtaposed to subimbricate; 2 postnasals; 0-1 (mode 1) internasals; upper labials to mideye 3-4 (mode 3); gular scales small, smooth, imbricate; chest scales acute to cycloid, flattened, smooth; midbody scales 46-70; escutcheon compact centrally, with or without extensions onto thighs, 5-7 x 8-26. Not sexually dichromatic; dorsum brown with darker flecking or vermiculations; sacral pattern lineate; at times head and body somewhat striped; venter white or yellow; underside of tail yellow to red; iris golden (S. a. argivus, S. a. lewisi) or blue (S. a. bartschi) (from Schwartz & Henderson 1991: 465).
