Diagnosis | DESCRIPTION: Size moderate (SVL in males to 31 mm, in females to 29 mm); an area of middorsal granules present; dorsals large, acute to cycloid, swollen, almost conical, keeled, imbricate, axilla to groin 28-34; ventrals smooth, cycloid to acute, imbricate, axilla to groin 23-27; dorsal caudal scales acute, swollen, imbricate, flat-lying; ventral caudal scales smooth, cycloid, an enlarged midventral row; snout rather acuminate, not depressed or decurved; snout scales large, granular, swollen, smooth, juxtaposed; 1 postnasal; 1-2 (mode 1) internasals; upper labials to mideye 3-4 (mode 4); central gular scales smooth; chest scales smooth; midbody scales 49-56; escutcheon with small central portion and slender (1-2 scales wide) extensions well onto thighs, 4--6 x 16-27. Dorsum (adults) uniform dark brown, dotted with white because of white centers of dorsal scales; head dull yellow to yellowish brown; tail dull yellow to yellow-brown with dark brown reticulum; venter light gray with varying invasion of dark dorsal pigment; juveniles with light, posterior, U-shaped head pattern formed of postocular stripes joining on occiput; preocular stripes onto canthus rostralis; body pattern (well-developed in only smallest individuals) of 2 sinuous, light, narrow crossbands, 1 in scapular region, 1 at midbody; light, scalloped, or W-shaped stripe on neck just behind head; faint throat pattern of light vermiculations present (from Schwartz & Henderson 1991: 472). |

Etymology | Named after Rollo Howard Beck (1870-1950), a collector for the California Academy of Sciences and the American Museum of Natural History. He collected in the Galapagos (1897-1898), Alaska (1911), and New Guinea (1928). |
