fantasticus: Guadeloupe: west coast of the Basse-Terre portion, from Mahaut south to vicinity of Baillif. Type locality: Martinique (in error); revised to Guadeloupe by Barbour, 1915; further restricted to city of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, by Thomas, 1965.

anidrotus: Marie-Galante; Type locality: 5 km SE Grande-Bourg, Marie-Galante.

fuga: Dominica, west coast; Type locality: 1 mi. N Morne Raquette, St. Joseph Parish, Dominica.

hippomnanes: La Désirade; Type locality: Baie Mahault, La Désirade.

karukera: Guadeloupe: known only from Gosier, Ilet de Gosier, and Terre-de-Bas, Îles de la Petite Terre; Type locality: Gosier, on the Grande-Terre portion of Guadeloupe.

ligniservulus: Montserrat; Type locality: Plymouth, St. Anthony's Parish, Montserrat.

orescius: Guadeloupe, the eastern Basse-Terre portion from Sofaïa south to vicinity of Trois Rivières; Type locality: 1 km S Prise d'Eau, the Basse-Terre portion of Guadeloupe;intergrades with S. fantasticus and S. karukera

tartaropylorus: Guadeloupe, the northern portion of Grande-Terre north of the Plaine de Grippon; Type locality: Port d'Enfer, 5.5 km N Campeche, Grande-Terre portion of Guadeloupe.

DiagnosisDESCRIPTION: Size moderate (SVL in males to 28 mm, in females to 29 mm); dorsals keeled, acute to cycloid. slightly imbricate. 23-38 axilla to groin; middorsal area of granular scales; ventrals keeled or smooth. acute to cycloid, 27-32 axilla to groin; dorsal caudal scales weakly keeled. fiat. imbricate. and acute; midventral caudal scales enlarged; snout scales fiat, weakly keeled, and juxtaposed; 2 post- nasals; 1-3 (mode 2) internasals; supralabials to mideye 3; midbody scales 41-50; escutcheon 3-5 x 23-29. Pattern sexually dichromatic; both sexes with brown dorsal ground color; light brown head which may be without markings or with dark stripes broken into small brown spots, or spots may fuse to produce dark head with light stripes or spots; dark brown stripe from nostril to eye, continues as postorbital stripe onto neck and converges slightly in scapular region with 1 from opposite side; some individuals with dark stripe paralleling postorbital stripe on neck, both fade into dorsal ground; dark stripe from snout to point between eyes where divides into 2, each stripe continuing to point immediately behind orbit, then continuing caudad toward midline, where they unite anterior to midline to form vertebral stripe; occipital spot white to light brown with dark brown outline; basic dorsal coloration is "salt-and-pepper" mottling of light and dark scales, either of which may dominate; minority scales isolated and grouped to form small, oblique bars (usually 1 scale wide) on flanks; bars form complex angular, beadwork-like pattern; tail with dark-edged light ocelli (usually paired) irregularly arranged along dorsal surface; gular pattern a series of dark lines that radiate from region of eye, across labials, onto gular region where they continue caudad to throat; venter uniformly white or with dark edging to scales (from Schwartz & Henderson 1991: 494).

Subspecies: Sphaerodactylus fantasticus phyzacinus THOMAS 1964 is now considered as a valid species.

Distribution: Ranges that include Venezuela and Mexico (e.g. Wermuth 1965) are based on erroneous 19th century interpretations of species limits.
