Diagnosis | DESCRIPTION: Size small (SVL in males to 25 mm, in females to 25 mm); dorsals large, acute, strongly keeled, flattened, imbricate, axilla to groin 20-30; no area of middorsal granules or granular scales; ventrals cycloid, imbricate, very rarely incompletely keeled, axilla to groin 23-28; dorsal caudal scales keeled, acute, imbricate, flat-lying, ventral caudal scales smooth, cycloid, enlarged midventrally; snout short, blunt; snout scales large, narrow, swollen, slightly imbricate; 1 post- nasal; 1-4 (mode 3) internasals; upper labials to mideye 3; gular scales keeled; chest scales variably keeled; midbody scales 48-52; escutcheon moderate, with extensions onto thighs to behind knees, 3-5 x 16-21 (from Schwartz & Henderson 1991: 496). Coloration: No sexual dichromatism; dorsum dark brown with pattern of darker scales or scale-groups and 2 rows of dark-edged buffy ocelli continuing onto tail as dark stripe scalloped by light areas; scapular pattern faint to absent, consisting of slightly darker brown patch with 2 small ocelli; head and neck pattern with 2 anteriorly pointing pale chevrons, the anterior derived from light area between dark supraciliary stripes and nuchal dark spot, the posterior from light anterior margin of scapular patch; venter pale but often invaded by dark pigment; throat nearly uniform pale yellow or with dark brown streaking; underside of tail dull orange; iris golden (from Schwartz & Henderson 1991: 496). |
