Diagnosis | DESCRIPTION: Size large (SVL in males to 41 mm, in females to 41 mm); habitus long and slim; dorsals small, acute, strongly keeled, flattened, imbricate, axilla to groin 37-47; no area of middorsal granules or granular scales; ventrals smooth, cycloid, imbricate, axilla to groin 29-41; dorsal caudal scales keeled basally, smooth distally, acute, imbricate, flat-lying, ventral caudal scales smooth, cycloid, enlarged midventrally; snout elongate, narrow, not depressed or decurved; snout scales small, flat, juxtaposed; 1-2 (mode 2) postnasals; 0-2 (mode 1) internasals; upper labials to mideye 2-3 (mode 3); gular scales variable, from weakly to strongly keeled or occasionally smooth, but even when keeling present, weak and expressed on only 1-2 transverse rows of gulars; chest scales smooth; midbody scales 57-71; escutcheon with short, compact central area and extensions onto thighs to near underside of knee, 4-7 x 15-34. Pattern variable both between and within populations; sexual dichromatism absent to weak and often obscured by variation within populations; dorsum tan, grayish tan, to deep brown; pattern variable from completely unspotted or dotted to irregularly dark-and-light mottled, the individual spots never uniform or circular in outline; head pattern basically: (1) plain or lightly stippled snout, (2) dark, postocular U including within itself a short, dark, longitudinal dash or line from between eyes and extending posteriorly, (3) an hourglass-shaped occipitonuchal figure, whose anterior portion is smaller than its posterior portion, (4) a black or dark brown scapular spot outlined anteriorly by straight yellowish line, and (5) an extremely elongate U beginning at posterior comer of eyes on each side and extending along neck to end behind, but separated from, scapular spot; iris orange-brown (from Schwartz & Henderson 1991: 507). |
