DiagnosisDiagnosis: Among the members of the fasciatus subgroup with both a high modal number of midbody scale rows (34 or > ) and prefrontals that meet medially, leptofasciatus is most similar to cinereus in having 1) the fifth supralabial below the centre of the eye more frequently than the sixth, 2) generally seven superciliaries, 3) generally subequally sized mid-dorsal scales, and 4) a viviparous mode of reproduction. S. leptofasciatus differs from cinereus, however, in 1) generally having fewer longitudinal scale rows at midbody (Table 2) and 2) being either uniformly dark above or having thin light crossbands separ- ated by wide dark interspaces instead of having light grey and dark crossbands of nearly equal width.
