DiagnosisDIAGNOSIS (genus): (1) Superior fossa of quadrate not enlarged (not penetrated by a process of the squamosal); (2) alveolar shelf of mandible robust; (3) posterior process of the interclavicle anterior to contact with the sternum long; (4) hemipenial sheath musculature extensive, lacking dorsal accessory muscle; (5) gular scales imbricate posteriorly; (6) interparietal not enlarged or absent (following Frost 1992 and TORRES-CARVAJAL 2007).

Type Species: Stenocercus rosei-ventris D’ORBIGNY in DUMÉRIL & BIBRON 1837 is the type species of the genus Stenocercus DUMÉRIL & BIBRON 1837: 349.

Diet: a large percentage of the diet of this species (10-30%) consists of ants (Lucas et al. 2023). 
EtymologyNamed after Latin roseus, rose-colored, red + Latin Ventris, stomach, womb; belly. (Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., April 2024)

The genus was named after Greek stenos (στενός), narrow + Greek cercos (κέρκος), tail.
