Type locality: Palca, Bolivia, 10,000 ft. (1,000 ft. according to TORRES-CARVAJAL 2005, in error).

DiagnosisDiagnosis: TORRES-CARVAJAL 2007. 
CommentSynonymy: Stenocercus juninensis was listed in the MCZ type catalogue as synonym of Stenocercus boettgeri.

EtymologyNamed after Latin variabilis, variable, changeable. [“...whitish beneath, throat marbled with olive; one specimen with a black bar across the scapular region and the throat and belly nearly entirely black...”]. (from Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., May 2024)
