CommentSynonymy: S. stenurus has been synonymized with S. petrii by LOVERIDGE 1947 but is treated as a valid species by more recent authors.

Werner 1899 describes Stenodactylus stenurus as a pet gecko that he kept until a Coronella amaliae (= Coronella girondica), kept in a separate terrarium, escaped and reached the terrarium with the Stenodactylus, and ate it (together with a Lacerta laevis and an Eremias guttulata). Werner found the snake the next day in place of the lizards. Werner mentions 13 specimens but not why he used the eaten specimen for his description or whether any of the other 12 were kept alive.

Distribution: records from Algeria are uncertain, due to unresolved taxonomy (fide Rachid Rouag, pers. comm., 8 May 2024).
