CommentType species: Stenolepis ridleyi BOULENGER 1887: 640 is the type species of the genus Stenolepis BOULENGER 1887 (or 1888). Castoe et al. (2004) give the year of description as 1888. 
EtymologyNamed after Henry Nicholas Ridley (1855-1956), a British botanist and collector who was working on the island of Fernando de Noronha (1887), when he first reported sightings of Olive Ridley Turtles in Brazil.

The genus was named after Greek steno (στενο), narrow, tight + Greek lepis (λεπίς), a scale. ["...Dorsal and lateral scales equal, hexagonal-lanceolate, keeled, imbricate, arranged in regular transverse series...”].
