DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Massive, stout body exceeds 1 m in length; dorsal scales in 27–29 rows; ventrals fewer than 136; chin shields petal-shaped, some upper labials behind the eye horizontally divided (MURPHY & VORIS 2014: 34). 
CommentDistribution: reports from China (as in ZHAO 1993) are dubious and require confirmation (Zhou and Yu 2002).

Type species: Hypsirhina bocourti JAN 1865: 258 is the type species of the genus Subsessor MURPHY & VORIS 2014: 34.

Diet: fish, frogs, crustaceans

Habitat: aquatic; swamps, shallow lakes, pools, and other stagnant water. 
EtymologyNamed after Marie Firmin Bocourt (1819-1904), French naturalist.

The genus was named after the sit-and-wait hunting strategy used by this snake. The gender is masculine.
