Type locality: "les environs de Padani, île de Sumatra." [=Padang, west Sumatera].

TypesHolotype: MNHN-RA 0934, a 370 mm male (Kunhardt, 1847) 
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Smooth scales in 27 (or possibly 25) rows; nasals in contact; last two or three upper labials horizontally divided; large internasal makes narrow contact with elongated loreal; five of six lower labials contact anterior chin shields (MURPHY & VORIS 2014: 35). 
CommentType species: Homalopsis albo-maculatus DUMÉRIL, BIBRON & DUMÉRIL 1854: 974 is the type species of the genus Sumatranus MURPHY & VORIS 2014: 37

Distribution: not on Java (Indonesia) fide de Lang 2017. Erroneously reported from Java by Gyi 1970 and subsequent authors who copied him. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin alba = white, and macula = spot.

The genus name is derived from the geographic distribution of the snake. Genus is feminine.
