CommentSynonymy mainly that of PETERS & OREJAS-MIRANDA 1970. Specimen referred to T. serra by Günther (1861) may be T. striaticeps [SUZART-ARGÔLO 1999, HR 30: 55]. THOMAS & DIXON (1977) synonymized Philodryas serra also with Tropidodryas striaticeps.

Type species: Herpetodryas Serra SCHLEGEL 1837 is the type species of the genus Tropidodryas FITZINGER 1843. Galeophis jani is the type species of the genus Galeophis BERTHOLD 1859. Note that Berthold spelled the genus “Galeophis” but the species “Geleophis jani”.

Habitat: fully arboreal (Harrington et al. 2018).
EtymologyNamed after Latin serra, saw. (Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., April 2024)

The genus was named after Greek tropideion (τροπιδεῖον), the keel + Greek dryas (δρυάς), a Dryad, nymph whose life was bound up with that of her tree.
