Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Tropidophorus kouzhitongi sp. nov. can be diagnosed from congeners by a combination of the following characters: (1) body size moderate, SVL 76.7–88.9 mm in adults; (2) TAL 95.0%–106.3% SVL; (3) limbs short, short, FLL 25.4%–27.3% SVL, HLL 36.3%–38.6% SVL; (4) head relatively narrow, HW 74.5%–80.9% HL; (5) only body slightly compressed dorsally, HD 76.3%–79.1% HW, BD 9%–13% SVL, TALD 10%–11% SVL; (6) head and body scales smooth or only very feebly keeled in adults, strongly keeled in juveniles; (7) supralabial six or seven, with a distinct diagonally running groove from second to fourth supralabials; (8) infralabial five or six; (9) frontonasal undivided; (10) paravertebral scales not enlarged, 57–59; (11) body scales small, midbody scale rows 32 or 33; (12) VEN 52– 55; (13) F4S 11–13, T4S 16–18; (14) scale rows at 10th subcaudal 17 or 18; (15) dorsal background Clay Color (Color 18), with black-edged, Buff Yellow (Color 6) diamond shaped spots along vertebral line and black-edged, white spots along dorsolateral line; inferolateral head and anterolateral body (anterior of forelimb) Drab Gray (Color 256), with white scales scattered; lateral body scattered with white scales; and (16) ventral body Light Chrome Orange (Color 76). Comparisons The new species is morphologically similar and phylogenetically sister to T. laotus, but can be diagnosed from the latter by having undivided frontonasal scale (vs. divided longitudinally), a higher number of supralabial scales (seven vs. six), a shorter tail (TAL 95.0%–106.3% SVL vs. 122.9%–142.6%), and a distinct throat color pattern (mottled vs. distinct laterally-oriented stripes). From the remaining species of the genus in the same clade and from nearby regions of northern Indochina, T. kouzhitongi sp. nov. differs from T. berdmorei by having divided anterior loreal (vs. singular), fewer number of ventral scale count (49– 52 vs. 58–61) and a distinct throat color pattern (mottled vs. uniformly colored); from T. goggei by having more scale rows at 10th subcaudal (17 or 18 vs. nine or 10); from T. matsuii by having frontonasal undivided (vs. divided) and fewer paravertebral scales (58 or 59 vs. 65); from T. latiscutatus by having differential shape of vertebral scales (regular vs. distinctively enlarged); from T. baviensis, T. hangnam, T. murphyi, and T. vongx by smooth or feebly keeled body scales in adults (vs. distinctively keeled).
