CommentSynonymy mainly after BROWN & ALCALA 1980. Populations of Tropidophorus from Sulawesi (Indonesia) have been referred to T. grayi, but Hikida et al. (2003) described them as a new species, T. baconi.

Tropidophorus aphilus and T. apulus are nomina nuda according to HIKIDA et al. (2003) and the latter may be a misspelling of the former. Both appear to refer to T. grayi and are thus listed here.
EtymologyNamed after British zoologist John Edward Gray (1800 – 1875), Keeper of Zoology at the British Museum in London from 1840 until 1874, although he started working at the museum in 1824.
