Paratypes (n = 4): MNHN-RA-1997.5088, adult female, collected on 19 October 1993 by L. Chirio, at ‘‘Massif de l’Aurès, Algeria(35.02N, 6.10E), colline à 5 kms au dessus de Baniane,’’; ZFMK 2350–51, adult males, collected on 12 March 1893 by M. Westphal, at ‘‘Biskra, Ferme Dufoury,’’ Algeria (34.97N, 5.62E); MNHN-RA-1973.1306, adult female, collected on 1 February 1934 by P. Carié, at Biskra, Algeria (34.86N, 5.73E). Localities and site conditions are as they appear in the original catalogs. 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Tropiocolotes chirioi sp. nov. is distinguished from all other species of Tropiocolotes by the combination of the following characters: 1) strongly keeled dorsal and ventral scales; 2) keeled dorsal head scales; 3) 43–46 scales around midbody; 4) one pair of postmental scales; 5) 1st pair of submandibular scales large, distinguishable from gular scales, but similar in size to scales of 2nd pair of submandibulars; 6) paired large brown dots on dorsal surface of neck and body; 7) 8–10 premaxillary tooth loci; 8) 23–28 maxillary tooth loci; 9) 28–30 dentary tooth loci; 10) small to medium-sized premaxilla-maxilla aperture; 11) transverse posterior margin of frontal slightly bowed; 12) anteriormost part of septomaxilla not contacting maxilla and vomer; 13) medial margin of pterygoid palatine process straight; 14) laterally pointing shaft of stapes straight; 15) small, triangular crista alaris of prootic; 16) mental foramina of dentary located between 3rd/4th and 19th/21st tooth. Comment 
EtymologyNamed after Laurent Chirio, in recognition of his valuable contribution to the knowledge of the herpetofauna of western and central Africa. Laurent is the collector of the holotype of the new species, and he was also very kind and helpful in many ways during this study.
