Type species: Tukutuku rakiurae (Thomas, 1981) is the type species of the genus Tukutuku NIELSEN et al. 2011.
EtymologyThe specific name is derived from “Rakiura”, the Maori name for Stewart Island.

The genus was named after a Maori word for ornamental lattice-work, often intricate and beautiful, referring to the sole species’ unique dorsal coloration pattern. Maori nouns typically have no gender, but the authors treat Tukutuku as masculine for the purposes of nomenclatural construction.
