| Etymology | Named after Greek συν- (= together) and θήρα (= hunting) in reference to the syntopic association of this species with four other species of burrowing reptiles in the Barahona Peninsular lowlands (note: because Typhlops haitiensis is now considered a synonym of T. sulcatus, only three species of fossorial reptiles [Typhlops sulcatus, Amphisbaena gonavensis, and Leptotyphlops pyrites] are known to occur together). |
