DistributionS India (Gujarat, Hills of Peninsular India. Western Ghats south of the Goa Gap to Tinnevelly; Eastern Ghats: Shevaroys, Coimbatore district, South Arcot, Jalarpet, Vizagapatam distriet, Ganjam; Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Telangana).

Syntypes [Silybura punctata GÜNTHER]: BMNH 1946.1.16.40 (Golcondah hills), 1946.1.16.43 —1964.1.16.46 (Pulney bills). BMNH 1946.1.16.28 (formerly 74.4.29.91, Nilgiris, Anamallays, 2,000—4,000 feet) is labelled type but should be excluded from the type series because of the different locality (fide GANS 1966).

Comment 
EtymologyNamed after Sir WaIter Elliot (1803-1887), a career civil servant in the East India Company, Madras (1821-1860), among other admistrative positions. He was also a distinguished Orientalist, with interests in botany, zoology, Indian languages, and archeology.
