Types	Holotype: SAMA R3222 (formerly USNM 128385), male, S end of Lake Hubert, NT, collected Australian-American Arnhem Land Expedition, iv-xi.1948.
Diagnosis	Diagnosis: A moderately large, dark, rock monitor (up to 102 cm long) with tail not strongly compressed; subdigital, palmar and plantar tubercles large and black; upper surfaces usually dark with little pattern. Distinguishable from V. glauerti by having distal two-fifths of tail unbanded whitish (rather than most of tail boldly banded with black and white). Etymology	the name refers to the black pads on the surface of the feet.
